Before you start
What you'll need
The 3CX app runs in your web browser and installs as a desktop app, so there's nothing heavy to download and it updates itself automatically.
| You'll need | Why |
|---|---|
| Your 3CX welcome email | Subject: "Your 3CX account details". It has your extension number, sign-in link and the button to set your password. Check your junk folder, or ask us to resend it. |
| Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge | The 3CX app works best in these browsers. Please make sure yours is up to date. |
| A headset, or speakers and a microphone | A USB or Bluetooth headset gives the best call quality. Your computer's built-in speakers and microphone also work. |
| Your mobile (optional) | Install the 3CX app from the App Store or Google Play to take calls on the go (step 5). |
The one step not to skip: step 3, turning on notifications. If notifications are blocked, the app can't alert you to incoming calls, so your phone won't appear to ring.
Your company's 3CX address is usually
Shared or remote desktop (terminal server or Citrix)? Your IT provider may need to install the app for you. We're happy to give them anything they need.

Step 1
Set your password and sign in
You only need to do this once.
| 1 | Open the email titled "Your 3CX account details". |
| 2 | Click Set your password and choose a strong password. If your company signs in with Microsoft or Google, choose that option instead. |
| 3 | Sign in with your email address (or extension number) and your new password. |
| 4 | If your company uses two-factor authentication, follow the prompts to register your authenticator app. |
| ||
| Sign in with your email or extension number and password. |
Forgotten your password? Go to your company's 3CX address and click Forgot password. A reset link is emailed to you.
Step 2
Install the 3CX desktop app
Installing 3CX as an app gives it its own window and taskbar icon, and lets it start with your computer.
| |||
| Look for the install icon at the right-hand end of the address bar. |
Google Chrome
| Microsoft Edge
|
Tip: open 3CX from its taskbar icon, not a browser tab, and keep it open (minimised is fine) during the day. If it's closed, calls can't ring on your computer.
On a Mac? The same steps work. The app appears in Applications and Launchpad; right-click its Dock icon and choose Options → Keep in Dock.
Step 3 · Important
Turn on notifications
Incoming calls reach you as notifications. If they're blocked anywhere along the way, your phone won't appear to ring. Check three places: the 3CX app, your browser and your computer.
A. In the 3CX app
| 1 | When 3CX first opens it asks to show notifications and use your microphone. Click Allow for both. |
| 2 | If you see a bell icon or a banner asking you to enable notifications, click it and choose Allow. |
B. In your browser (if you clicked "Block" by mistake)
| 1 | Click the padlock or site settings icon at the left of the address bar. In the installed app, open the ⋮ menu and choose App info or Site settings. |
| 2 | Set Notifications to Allow. |
| 3 | Set Microphone to Allow (and Camera if you use video). |
| 4 | Close and reopen the 3CX app. |
C. On your computer
Windows 10 and 11
| Mac
|
Quick test: ask a colleague to call your extension. You should see a pop-up and hear it ring.
Step 4
Choose your audio device or headset
Tell 3CX which headset, speaker and microphone to use.
| 1 | Connect your headset before opening 3CX. |
| 2 | In the dialler, click the Calling device & Audio/Video settings drop-down just above the number pad. |
| 3 | Choose your headset for the microphone and speaker. |
| 4 | Choose where the ringtone plays. Many people pick their computer speakers so they hear it without the headset on. |
| 5 | Make a test call to a colleague. |
Headset tips: keep a wireless headset's USB dongle plugged in and the headset charged. If the sound switches device when something is plugged in or unplugged, re-select your headset in the audio settings. Looking for a new headset? We supply models tested with 3CX.
Step 5 · Optional
Add 3CX to your mobile
Make and take calls on your work number from anywhere.
| 1 | Install 3CX from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). |
| 2 | Find the QR code in your welcome email or the 3CX desktop app. |
| 3 | Open the 3CX mobile app and scan the QR code. Your extension sets itself up. |
| 4 | Allow notifications, microphone and (on iPhone) phone call integration. |
